Exploring the Art of Fashion Construction and Cutting

CAFTCAD and SMOC are excited to partner to present a unique “inside out” experience as we dive into the art and craftsmanship of fashion construction and cutting. Speakers Ivan Sayers and Mitchell MacKay will discuss the intricate nature of clothing construction as it changes over the decades of the 20th century. The presentation will showcase beautiful pieces from SMOC’s historic collection of fashion, ranging from the 1900s all the way up to the 1990s.

This event will also feature a silent auction as a fundraising tool for both organizations.

About the Speakers:

Ivan Sayers is a fashion historian who specializes in the study of women’s, men’s, and children’s fashions from 1650 to the present. He graduated from UBC in 1969 with a BA in Classical Studies. A long-time resident of Vancouver, he worked at the Vancouver Museum from 1970 to 1990 and was its Curator of History from 1976 to 1990. Sayers has one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of historic clothing in private hands in Canada. He has produced fashion shows, lectures, and exhibitions all over western and central North America. He commonly jokes that his collection is so vast, he sleeps in the dining-room of his three-bedroom home.

Mitchell MacKay’s career in costume construction has spanned over four decades.  He has worked as a cutter, milliner, and special effects costumer for most of the major theatres in Canada including The Stratford Festival, The Shaw Festival, Canadian Stage, The National Ballet, The Vancouver Playhouse, The Citadel Theatre and Bard on the Beach.  Since moving to Vancouver in 1990 Mitchell has created costumes for more than sixteen feature films and seven TV series including six seasons as principal cutter/fitter for the Emmy-nominated series Once Upon a Time.  His career has taken him to Europe and Africa and allowed him to rub shoulders with many of the world’s rich and famous.  “Remember people, it's all about the bragging rights!”
